Maya Bay Krabi Thailand

Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park officials in the southern province of Krabi have declared that Maya Bay and Loh Sama Bay will be closed to tourists from August 1 to September 30. During the rainy season, the measure aims to preserve nature and prioritize tourist security.

The Head of the National Park, Ratchanok Parenoi, pointed out that the rainy season in Thailand occurs yearly from August to September. This time of year brings intense waves and storms, creating major challenges for sea tourism.

The primary concern during this season is the safety of tourists, particularly in Maya Bay, a prominent tourist destination. Keeping the area accessible during this period would endanger local and foreign tourists.

Moreover, nature preservation is a pressing concern. Maya Bay and Loh Sama Bay have experienced a surge in visitors since the relaxation of pandemic restrictions. It has been determined that a two-month closure is required for nature to recuperate adequately.

In April, Reuters reported a rise in black reef shark populations due to the closure of Maya Bay during the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant example of the positive effects of such measures. With the area’s complete reopening, however, shark populations dropped drastically.

The challenge of balancing the requirements of marine life and the environment with those of tourism is complicated. While officials are trying to restrict tourist activities and the opening hours of the area, they are under pressure from tour agencies and locals whose livelihoods depend on tourism.

During the closure of Maya Bay and Loh Sama Bay, visitors can still visit Pi Leh Bay and Viking Cave, two other well-known locations in the national park.

During the tough rainy season, the closure of these harbors in Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park showcases a proactive approach to preserving the park’s natural attractiveness and the safety of tourists.
