Thailand’s Test & Go quarantine exemption program is now suspended to new applicants indefinitely. Tourists who have already been allowed to enter the country through the Test & Go program must enter the country before January 15.

During the meeting between Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and CCSA, they decided to maintain the closure of the program indefinitely.

Those who have obtained a Thailand Pass QR code will be permitted to enter Thailand under the Test & Go program together with the last batch of approved Test & Go travelers arriving on January 15. These travelers will be required to submit 2 real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests, 1 upon arrival and another test on their 7th day in the country.

The good news is that additional destinations have been approved to accept tourists under the Sandbox Program. Along with Phuket, other approved sandbox destinations are Phang Nga, Krabi, and islands off the Surat Thani (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Koh Pha Ngan will remain open for foreign tourists starting January 11, 2022.

The present Sandbox restrictions include at least 7-night stays in authorized SHA hotels and undergo RT PCR tests and USD50,000 of insurance. Visitors may go to other parts of the country after spending 7 nights at a Sandbox hotel.

The latest announcements exclude major tourist destinations like Pattaya and Bangkok, which are currently in a state of tourist limbo until the Test & Go scheme or another program is revealed.

Since the detection of the Omicron variant, the CCSA stopped applications for the Test & Go and Sandbox schemes on December 21, except the Phuket Sandbox. The majority of the early cases are coming from tourists who had just arrived in Thailand from another country.
