Starting in May, foreign travelers to Thailand will be subjected to antigen testing rather than RT PCR tests upon arrival. The Centre for COVID‐19 Situation Administration announced yesterday (April 8) that further restrictions will be eased based on the number of infections after the Songkran festival as they continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in the country.

The Deputy Public Health Minister said that travelers can wait for their test results on-site, which should take less than 30 minutes, than booking a room and waiting overnight for RT PCR test results.

PM Prayut Chan-o-cha said at the meeting that the government would explore easing more travel restrictions next month to let more tourists visit the country, adding

“We will do our best to balance economy and public health.”

The adjustments were tentatively scheduled for next month.  One of these is the reduction of required documents for Thailand Pass, a lesser quarantine period for unvaccinated, and changing the required insurance coverage to US$20,000 (672,000 baht).

The government has gradually been easing restrictions since February to provide convenience to international visitors coming to Thailand.  The plan of shifting from PCR to Antigen test is a part of the 4-step plan to lessen paperwork and restrictions.

According to the CCSA, over 470,000 international visitors visited in the first quarter of this year, exceeding the figure of 420,000 in 2021. According to the Tourism and Sports ministry, Thailand will get at least 7 million international visitors this year.
