The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reports that a total of 913,013 foreign visitors arrived in the country during the first half of January.

Yuthasak Supsasorn, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, stated that Russia had surpassed Malaysia as the top tourism market with 99,593 arrivals.

Chinese nationals are placed 10th in the first half of January, with 28,643 arrivals

According to Yuthasak, this is consistent with the anticipation that the Chinese market would progressively recover this year.

This weekend will likely see an increase in Chinese arrivals in celebration of the Chinese New Year. Sojern, a travel marketing company, reports that more internet searches for flights to Thailand during the Lunar New Year than to any other country in the region.

TAT intends to attract 25 million tourists to Thailand this year, the target goal is more than double its 11.5 million international arrivals last year.

TAT anticipates that four tourism markets will deliver over one million visitors to the kingdom this year.  These tourists are from China, Malaysia, India, and South Korea.

TAT expects that this year, Thailand will recover 80% of its tourism revenue from tourists who visited the country in 2019.

As for domestic travelers, the TAT is initiating a campaign called “Thai Tiew Thai” or“Thais travel Thailand”, with a target to attract 250 million domestic tourists this year.

TAT is currently collecting information in preparation for the extension of the 45-day visa upon arrival exemption. Visa exemptions on arrival for travelers from 68 countries with bilateral agreements with Thailand will be allowed for a 45-day visa-free stay in the country until the end of March 2023.

TAT plans to extend the 45-day tourist stay in Thailand until the end of 2023.
