Thailand Reports 5.5 Million Foreign Tourist Visits Year-to-Date

Government spokesperson Trisulee Trisoranakul announced that during the first three months of 2023, over 5.5 million international tourists visited Thailand, bringing over 200 billion baht to the economy.

According to data released by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, from January 1 to March 18, there were 5,578,721 foreign visitors to Thailand, generating 215 billion baht in tourism earnings.

Comparatively, Thailand had 11.5 visitors in 2022. In only three months of 2023, Thailand accomplished over half of that amount.

The data, according to Trisulee, suggest that the tourism sector is “developing steadily,” But the surge in tourist numbers has produced certain drawbacks that must be handled, a spokesperson said.

It is challenging for Thailand’s international airports to manage so many passengers, resulting in lengthy queues at check-in desks, security, and immigration—both incoming and departing.

In addition, Trisulee noted that the cost of airline tickets has increased, hindering the complete recovery of the business.

Today, the Ministry of Transport invited personnel from the Airports of Thailand (AOT) and the Aviation Business Operations Committee to address possible solutions to these critical matters.

Because of delays, Thai Airways demanded that foreign travelers come to Suvarnabhumi Airport 4 hours before their scheduled departure time, highlighting the increasing strain at the airport.

Despite Thai Airways’ statement, Airports of Thailand (AOT) claimed that it was incorrect, stating that a 3-hour prior arrival at the airport was sufficient for passengers to complete the check-in process and reach their boarding gate.
