Recovery in Sight as Thailand Welcomes Back Chinese Tour Groups

After the pandemic, the first Chinese tour groups returned to Thailand. Thai officials hoped that the return of Chinese tourists would speed up the recovery of the kingdom’s tourism industry. The move comes after China added Thailand to its list of 20 places to visit outside of China. The government targets at least 5 million Chinese tourists to the Land of Smiles by the end of 2023.

Thailand Anticipates a Gradual Increase in Chinese Visitors:
Despite the return of travelers, Thailand has indicated that it predicts a gradual increase in the number of Chinese visitors due to constrained flight availability and reduced tourism operator capacity post-pandemic. Nevertheless, the country is optimistic and is anticipating international tourist arrivals to more than double this year from last year’s 11.2 million.

First Chinese Tour Groups Arrive in Bangkok:
Senior Thai government personnel and Chinese diplomats lined up at Bangkok’s airport to welcome the first two groups of around 20 Guangzhou visitors. The tourists have a six-day schedule that will take them to renowned tourist spots in Bangkok and beyond, from temples to beaches.

Thai Government Agencies Work to Attract Chinese Tourists:
According to government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha has instructed Thai government agencies to set up enticing tour packages and marketing offers to attract at least five million Chinese tourists this year. The governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Yuthasak Supasorn, said, “We are delighted to welcome these first groups and anticipate many more in the future.”

Chinese Tourists Contributed to Thailand’s Tourism Industry Prior to the Pandemic:
Prior to the pandemic, Chinese tourists contributed around 28% of the record 40 million international arrivals in Thailand in 2019.

Thailand is eager to see the return of Chinese tourists and is working towards a gradual increase in their numbers.
