Ubon Ratchathani Prepares For The Annual “Parading Shrimp” Festival

In September, the yearly “Parading Shrimp” event in Ubon Ratchathani is expected to draw tourists to the Kaeng Lamduan Wildlife Study Centre in Nam Yuen district.

The Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) said in a Facebook post that the yearly natural phenomenon is likely to start on September 1 and will last until September 30.

The post said that, once a year, during September, lots of hairy claw shrimps or Macrobrachium eriocheirum will march on the rocky banks of Kaeng Lamduan in their effort to search for food.  This phenomenon has already been seen for decades.

According to the DNP, hairy claw shrimps will start the parade after sunset, depending on weather conditions, between 6 and 10 p.m. When the current isn’t too strong, as a result of less rain, fewer shrimp will be seen marching on the rocks.

In order to handle the influx of tourists, the Kaeng Lamduan Wildlife Study Centre will close at 10 p.m. for the whole month of September and offer tour guides to assist visitors walking the trail in the dark.  Safety protocols will be placed to avoid the spread of Covid-19.  It is highly recommended that tourists going to the area must bring flashlights and wear face masks.
